Mombasa, Kenya, 7th June 2024- In the coastal city of Mombasa, where traffic congestion clogs major arteries and vehicle emissions account for nearly 30% of the region’s carbon footprint, a groundbreaking revolution is gaining traction. This revolution, however, is propelled not by the conventional might of fossil fuels but by the simple yet profound power of cycling – an eco-friendly mode of transport that could significantly reduce Mombasa’s environmental impact if widely adopted. Across the lively streets, an increasing number of residents are embracing two-wheeled mobility, sparking a paradigm shift in how the city moves.
The Birth of a Cycling Crusader
Otieno’s path to becoming a cycling advocate was shaped by his experiences as a journalist covering the devastating impacts of climate change. Witnessing rising sea levels and erratic weather patterns firsthand ignited a determination to be part of the solution.
“My research identified transport as a major emission contributor,” Otieno recounts. “That’s when I realized bicycles’ potential to drive real change.”
It was an epiphany that set him on a mission to challenge norms and promote a greener way of life.
Paving the Way for Sustainability
In 2022, Otieno founded Bike is Best Kenya to position cycling as a viable, eco-friendly transportation solution in Mombasa. His vision extends beyond just reducing emissions.
“Cycling nurtures healthier lifestyles, saves time and money, eases traffic congestion, and fosters community connections,” he explains passionately.
Bike is Best Kenya’s activities span advocacy, consultancy, bike tours, rentals, and sales of traditional and electric models. But Otieno’s crusade challenges the misconception that cycling is solely for the underprivileged.
Breaking Barriers, Changing Mindsets
One of Otieno’s greatest challenges lies in overcoming the negative attitudes surrounding cycling. “We highlight the environmental benefits, cost-effectiveness, and health advantages of cycling,” he says. “Our advocacy has already led to increased bicycle usage in Mombasa, demonstrating that cycling is a viable and respectable mode of transport for all.”
Otieno’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. As more and more Mombasa residents embrace the freedom and joy of cycling, a palpable shift in perception is taking hold. Bicycles, once dismissed as a sign of poverty, are now celebrated as symbols of environmental consciousness and self-empowerment.
Removing Obstacles, Embracing Innovation
Another hurdle Otieno faces is the high cost of electric bicycles, which could deter many from embracing this eco-friendly alternative. But true to his entrepreneurial spirit, he has forged partnerships with financial institutions to make e-bikes more accessible through leasing and financing options.
“We’ve partnered with financial institutions to make e-bikes more accessible to people,” he explains. “We’ve also been able to enter into leasing arrangements for those who may want to hire a bike for a day, a week, or even a month.”
Otieno’s commitment to promoting cycling extends beyond mere sales. Bike is Best Kenya conducts safety trainings, emphasizing the use of helmets and reflectors, and collaborates with the Department of Transport and Infrastructure to advocate for safer bicycle infrastructure.
“Safety is paramount,” Otieno stresses. “We provide safety training whenever someone walks into our premises, including guides on safety measures before any bike purchase or rental.”
A Vision that Transcends Borders
But Otieno’s vision doesn’t stop at Mombasa’s borders. He has ambitious plans to expand Bike is Best Kenya’s services to other major cities like Kisumu, Nakuru, and Eldoret, aiming to replicate the success achieved in Mombasa and further promote sustainable transportation across the country.
“We welcome partnerships with organizations and institutions that share our vision for sustainable transportation,” Otieno says, his eyes alight with passion. “Support and collaborations can significantly enhance our impact. Together, we can make cycling the best mode of eco-friendly transportation and foster a healthier, more sustainable environment.”
As the sun dips below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the city, Otieno’s determination shines brighter than ever. With a bicycle as his catalyst for change and a heart filled with purpose, he is pedaling towards a greener future, one revolution at a time.
The Growing Momentum
Otieno’s efforts are part of a broader global movement towards sustainable transportation and environmental stewardship. Cities around the world are recognizing the need to reduce their carbon footprints and promote eco-friendly alternatives to traditional modes of transportation.
In Copenhagen, Denmark, for example, cycling has become an integral part of the city’s culture and infrastructure, with dedicated bike lanes and ample bike parking facilities. The city’s commitment to promoting cycling has resulted in a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and improved air quality.
Similarly, in Bogotá, Colombia, the city has implemented a comprehensive network of bike lanes and pedestrian walkways, known as the Ciclovía, which closes off major streets to vehicular traffic on Sundays and public holidays. This initiative has not only encouraged cycling and physical activity but has also fostered a sense of community and social cohesion.
As the world grapples with the pressing challenges of climate change and environmental degradation, advocates like Jonathan Otieno are leading the charge towards a more sustainable future. Their efforts serve as a reminder that individual actions, when amplified by collective determination, can create ripples of change that resonate far beyond their immediate surroundings.
